Coming soon to BMW of Macon, your leading Macon BMW dealer, is the all-new BMW X3. Like the other X-models, the X3 will be manufactured at the recently renovated Spartanburg plant in South Carolina. The finished expansion project completes BMW’s $1 billion dollar investment in the US automotive market that began back in 2008.
Macon BMW Drivers Appreciate BMW’s DedicationThe newly re-opened 1.2 million square feet BMW manufacturing plant in Spartanburg exemplifies BMW’s commitment to the United States, to creating new and exciting cars, and to becoming more environmentally friendly throughout their operations.
The plant, which was originally opened in 1994 has been used to manufacture all of the BMW X series and has manufactured more than 1.6 million cars for customers all over the world. It has played a huge role in the growth of the Southeast as a pillar of the automotive industry and was the first successfully operated plant to be owned by a European auto manufacturer in the United States.
BMW is already both directly and indirectly responsible for 23,000 jobs in South Carolina. With the plant’s expansion, BMW will be hiring 1,600 more by the end of 2010. BMW Group Chairman Dr. –Ing Norbert Reithofer explains, “Our investments, the creation of new jobs and our active involvement in local communities are proof of our deep commitment to the U.S. and its people, and we will continue on this path into the future.”
The Spartanburg plant, which will be the sole BMW X3 manufacturing site is offering a new twist to the production process. Unlike most vehicles made in the United States, the BMW 3 can be built-to-order thanks to the plants new flexible assembly processes. For instance a Macon BMW customer can modify specifications and make changes to the order up to six days before it begins production.
The new plant is also environmentally conscientious. The improvements made to the South Carolina BMW plant have increased production rates while decreasing waste and energy consumption. BMW is committed to clean production and have made great strides in that department by reducing water consumption by 30% and decreasing landfill waste by 12.5% in the last year. The new Integrated Paint Process (IPP) system has also helped by reducing the energy consumption of the paint shop by 30% and carbon emissions by a whopping 43%.
